Reaction to Trump's Plan to Impose 100% Tariffs on Films Distributed in the U.S. but Produced Abroad

This morning, via his social media platform, the U.S. President reiterated his intent to impose 100% tariffs on films distributed in the United States but produced abroad.

"Our movie industry has been stolen from the U.S. by other countries (...). In order to fix this endless problem, I will impose 100% tariffs on all films produced outside the United States."

Given that the situation remains unchanged from the U.S. President's declaration made this past May, Bernard Larivière, President of AQTIS 514 IATSE, reminds us that:

"Serving us the same threat as in May, without any further details, is ignoring the fragility of a cinematic ecosystem already shaken by the pandemic and the American strikes of 2023. Our industry is woven from complex international collaborations—for example, filming in Montreal is intimately linked to special effects elsewhere and post-production in the United States; this would be a decision that is virtually impossible to implement. Obviously, if such tariffs were to be applied, employment in Quebec would be in danger. We continue to work with our Canadian and American partners to ensure we protect our jobs, our expertise, and the continuity of our activities."
