Introduction to the Profession of Assistant Props Master

Length : 14 hours

ABOUT

This course is designed to familiarize participants with the profession of set props master and to give them the basic knowledge needed to understand and perform the duties of assistant props master. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of collaborating with the other departments involved in the props process (costume, weapons, etc.). The role and work of the off-set props master will be discussed.

This course is divided into two components. In the theoretical component, the participants will be introduced to the process of going through a script and related documents to prepare the properties list, and to all aspects of preparing for a shoot. In the applied component, the participants will take part in practical exercises.

Targeted professions

Anyone interested in the profession of assistant set props master.

Prerequisites

Have taken the course “Initiation to community life” or already be a member of AQTIS 514 IATSE.

Training team

Gilbert Verreault, set props master, studied film and communication at the Université de Montréal. Since then, for over 20 years, he has worked in the art department in the film industry. He began his career as a set technician and has since worked as a set and off-set props master on numerous productions.

  •  Duties of the set props master
  •  Duties of the assistant set props master
  •  Duties of the off-set props master
  •  What set props masters expect of their assistants
  •  Reading and going through a script
  •  Understanding the documents related to the script
  •  What is continuity?
  •  Collaborating with the direction, wardrobe and weapons departments. Who is responsible for what.
  •  Period productions
  •  Planning and organizing a work day
  •  Receiving props from the off-set props master onto the set
  •  Contents of a personal work belt
  •  Props cart and its contents
  •  Props that are always essential and props related to the type of production
  •  Visit to a set props master’s truck
  •  Viewing film clips to illustrate certain situations (for example, problems with connections for food scenes, glasses of wine etc.)
  •  Practical exercises with props
