Just a Farewell

Hello,

The AQTIS 514 IATSE Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee is about to submit its proposed Policy on Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility to the Executive Committee. This is a major step for our organization, marking our commitment to establishing a strong, impactful, and resolutely modern culture of inclusion within our industry.

Reminder on the Hiring of Recognized Members (Article 3.5)

Furthermore, the new rules regarding the obligation for Quebec productions to hire 80% of people recognized in their function sometimes seem misunderstood.

Let us remind you that Article 3.5 of our collective agreements with the AQPM is very clear:

"For the purposes of a given production, the producer shall prioritize the hiring of AQTIS 514 IATSE technician members who are recognized in the function for which their services are retained."

This is not wishful thinking; it is the result of good-faith negotiation. Productions must prioritize the hiring of recognized members, period.

Here are the main terms:
  • Productions must hire at least 80% of recognized individuals per day of shooting, with a minimum of one person per day for small teams;

  • Directors of photography and some creator positions are excluded from the calculation;

  • A $55 contribution per person/day exceeding the ratio is provided;

  • This $55 is not a penalty but a contribution paid into a training fund—a significant gesture, knowing that producers traditionally contribute very little to the training of their freelance employees;

  • No single person is "the" person who causes the ratio to be exceeded. This is based on a global monthly calculation.

I invite you to consult this memo to learn more.

Finally, many of you are already aware, but I am announcing to you that I will be stepping down from my position as Vice-President – Television and Documentaries after the next election, at the end of April 2026.

Why this decision? Because experience is important, that’s true. But I sincerely believe that as an elected employee, if you haven't accomplished what you set out to do in seven years, you likely never will. If it is done, it is time to make room for new ideas and new energy.

I have always believed that we must be wary of professional elected officials. The commitment must always be to serve the organization, not to serve a career.

I am leaving my position absolutely certain that we have excellent professionals within our organization to take over with the person who will be replacing me.

Who will run in the March elections? I encourage you to get involved, as it remains the only true way to have an impact on the future of our industry.

I look forward to seeing you on set or elsewhere!

Dominic Pilon,
Vice-President – Television & Documentaries
